Today started at 6:45am and we went full tilt until 11:45pm. I went down to the local with Gord for one last email check about the shuttle and the villa. He grabbed some coffee and yummies and we headed out towards roma once Amber and Lisa picked us up. We were a little behind because Lisa couldn't close her suitcase. We were on the the familiar route out of Sorrento, watching the village get further away and vesuvius getting closer.
About half way to Rome, we stopped at cassino to visit a war memorial. We got there almost completely by accident. It was very moving - i got chills when we walked past the entry way. After a few wring turns, we got to the airport. We ran away from the rental car to make sure would get to the hotel in time to catch the 2:15 shuttle to Rome. We made it just in time (we checked in at 2:10) but the desk clerk let us throw our stuff in our room.
We arrived by the coleseum about a half hour later with strict instructions to return at 10:10. We did about 9km of walking, stopping to see so many things along the way including the pantheon, trevi fountain, st peters bascilica, the Vatican courtyard thing and numerous forts and ruins.
The bascilica
We also stumbled across a market where we picked up candy from a vendor with all sorts of treats, and Lisa got a super soft cashmere scarf. We munched and walked and i realized shortly into the annihilation of my candy that i don't really like it anymore and proceeded to throw the rest of it out. I know! Shocking!
We wandered around and stumbled upon the Peroni restaurant and i think the place where they brew it. We couldn't get in the door since it was so busy but i took many pictures for my new Peroni family to see. We had dinner at a nice restaurant just off the main drag - white wine, bruschetta, chicken and peppers is a great way to spend my last dinner in Italy.
The coleseum from our shuttle
We made it back just in time to catch the shuttle, apparently less one person. We waited 5 extra minutes, during which time, Lisa a i had a dance party in the shuttle to pump up the volume. Once we got moving, the tunes got a little more dance mix 98 but our shuttle driver cranked it up! It made for the ride home seeming really short.
We got back, booked our shuttle and checked into breakfast tomorrow. Everything so far has been charged to our room, making this last leg our journey much less stressful We've both showered and Lisa is just finishing repacking her suitcases so tomorrow we just have to roll out to breakfast on the roof patio then grab our shuttle to the airport. I'll be home in less that 24 hours and I'm not sure how i feel about it yet. Italy has been great but I'm ready to see my boys back home.
